The Children’s Museum was founded in 1979, by the citizens of Boca Raton to provide local history and exhibitions for the children and families of a growing community. It operates in this oldest remaining house, “Singing Pines” and has been charged with its preservation. Beginning as a historic destination, through the years the Children’s Museum has expanded its scope to become a hands-on place for exploring the sciences, culture, art & humanities.
In 1987, the Museum was first in offering annual children’s cultural festivals with KidsFest. Now titled Sun-Sentinel KidsFest, 6,000-8,000 family members enjoy the six-hour event to celebrate the arts, history and culture each year
The outreach programs of the Children’s Museum are inter-disciplined. The Traveling Museum was started in 1989, FACES in 1994, and Archaeo-Project in 1999. Current funding and collaborative efforts for these programs include: The Drachen Foundation, The Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, The Division of Historic Resources, State of Florida, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, The Schmidt Family Foundation, The Vegso Family Foundation, The Graves Museum, The Gold Coast Opera, NASA-JPL Laboratories, The Palm Beach County Cultural Council, The Palm Beach County School System, and the Division of Cultural Affairs-Florida Arts.
Television Programming became part of the Museum’s operation in 2002. Beginning with The TaleSpinner’s Club (a weekly children’s reading and arts program), original stories and storyboards were created to promote diversity education. Other unique programming is part of the production year. For example, the filming of Boca Raton’s Mayor Stephen Abrams being interviewed by fifth grade students commemorates Law Day.
Plans are now being made for a capital campaign to build computer driven exhibitions, labs and a television production studio. Nicknamed “KidsTek”, the Children’s Museum is hoping to break ground during its 25th Anniversary Year.
